Some of the more frequent causes of dizziness come from inner ear problems. The inner ear has the hearing organ, but also has the balance organ. And disease is there, inflammation, physical trauma, a head injury for instance, or diseases affecting the nerves connecting the inner ear with the brain can produce various forms of dizziness. Diseases of the brain itself also produce dizziness.

Why are there so many different causes of dizziness?

Almost the whole body is involved in spatial orientation and balance, from the tip of the toes, through to the top of the head. Any problem which affects the input to the brain from an area of the body involved in spatial awareness and orientation could potentially produce symptoms of dizziness and vertigo.
