Funded Wig Service Now Available for MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound Patients
Many people considering MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) treatment for essential tremor or tremor-dominant Parkinson’s disease tell us they’re excited about an incisionless alternative to traditional and more invasive surgery, but hesitant about one particular detail: the need to shave the head before treatment.
At the Queen Square Imaging Centre, we understand that hair is an important part of a person’s identity. While having your head shaved is necessary to ensure the ultrasound energy passes safely and accurately through the skull, we know that this step can feel emotionally challenging.
To help patients feel comfortable and confident throughout their treatment journey, we are delighted to introduce a new funded wig service, available to all patients undergoing MR-guided Focused Ultrasound at Queen Square.
Why Head Shaving Is Required for MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound
MR-guided Focused Ultrasound works by delivering precisely targeted ultrasound energy through the skull to a specific area of the brain responsible for tremor. The energy is focused at a single point – similar to how sunlight can be concentrated through a magnifying glass – to create a small, controlled lesion that reduces tremor symptoms.
For the ultrasound waves to travel safely and effectively, they must pass directly from the treatment helmet, through a water bath that surrounds the patients head, to the scalp. Hair can trap tiny air pockets close to the scalp that interfere with the transmission of sound energy, reducing the accuracy and effectiveness of the treatment.
By closely shaving the head, we can reduce the risk of these air pockets forming, and ensure the ultrasound can be delivered with pinpoint precision – allowing the treatment to work exactly as intended.
The good news is that hair begins to grow back immediately and in the meantime, our new funded wig service is here to help you feel confident and comfortable during that short regrowth period.

“I can’t recommend Jennifer enough! From the very first meeting, she made me feel completely at ease with her patience and genuine care. After battling hair loss due to illness and thyroid issues, I was hesitant about wearing a full wig. Jennifer’s expertise and the amazing team made all the difference. They listened to my needs and provided a solution that looks natural and boosts my confidence. The entire experience has been positive, and I feel so much more confident now. Jennifer is not only talented but also incredibly kind and understanding. I’m so grateful for her support and highly recommend her!”

How the Funded Wig Service Works
Patients who have been assessed as being suitable candidates for MR-guided Focused Ultrasound at Queen Square and who would like to consider using a wig during their period of hair regrowth, can be referred directly to our partners as part of their treatment pathway.
- An initial consultation in person or via video call will be offered, so you can discuss how you like to wear your hair, and what you would like to achieve from your wig.
- Various options of wig will be offered, with expert consultation on style, colour, and fit.
- Once you have chosen your wig, an appointment will then be arranged at a time close to your treatment date so you can have the wig expertly fitted, cut and styled.
- The cost of the wig will be covered by Queen Square.
- Each piece is designed to look natural, feel comfortable, and suit your individual preferences.
This small but meaningful service reflects our commitment to supporting patients not only clinically, but also emotionally – helping you focus on what matters most: tremor control and quality of life.
